ESL Volunteer Application

Piscataway Public Library offers free English as a second language (ESL) classes for adults learning English. If you are interested in volunteering to teach a class at the Library please fill out this application. Volunteers must have a teaching degree or a certificate from a literacy organization. Volunteers must also be fluent in English. Thank you for your interest in teaching ESL at the Library!

About the ESL Program: Piscataway Public Library's ESL classes are split into two 10-week semesters. The fall semester starts in September and ends in November. The spring semester starts in February and ends in April. Classes take place on weekdays in the afternoon or evening for one hour per week. Volunteers can teach beginner, intermediate, or advanced classes and will receive training from the Library.

Please read through these teacher requirements:

Teachers must be at least 18 years old.

Teachers must be fluent in English.

Teachers are expected to teach one hour per week (plus prep time).
Teachers are expected to teach for an entire 10-week session.
Teachers are volunteers; they do not get paid. They may accept “thank-you” gifts, but may not accept monetary payment.
Teachers must call the library if they will be late to, or absent from, a class.
Unless they have a teaching degree, teachers must be certified from a literacy volunteers organization. 
Teachers are expected to check their email regularly. Communication between the Library and volunteers will be mainly by email.
