Amedeo Clemente Modigliani is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures — works that were not received well during his lifetime, but later became much sought after. In this painting Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne in a Large Hat, we can see Modigliani's signature distortion and exaggeration, with a long, oval face and long nose. He uses curving and twisting lines. He was strongly influenced by African art, which is reflected in the mask-like face.

In this workshop, the instructor will provide guidance on using oil pastels and other tools to achieve the desired effect along with the historical context of the painting, the relationship between the artist and his muse, and the impact of Modigliani's style on the Expressionist movement.
