Computer Resources
iBistro Online Electronic
Catalog
Piscataway Public Library has computers dedicated to
iBistro, the Library's Online Electronic Catalog, where customers can search the Library's collection and
even place holds on
materials not currently available. If Piscataway Library doesn't have the material,
customers can also access the
catalogs for other libraries in the consortium where Piscataway Library customers
have borrowing privileges. The Library's catalog is also accessible via home
computers too.
Research Databases
The Library offers computers with access to the Library's research databases. These
include: EBSCOhost,
which offers full text of thousands of magazine articles; Custom
Newspapers Database, which provides access to full text newspapers; Informe,
a Spanish language database of magazine articles; Jersey
Clicks, a web site that allows you to search multiple full-text resources
simultaneously through one user-friendly site; and Novelist,
which offers fiction finder, matching a favorite author or book, or finding a
description of a plot or genre.
Internet Services
Piscataway Public Library offers Internet access as
part of its mission to provide Township residents with access to a wide range or
information and ideas. All Library customers who use access the Internet
at Piscataway Library are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Library's
Internet Policy.
The Adult/Young Adult Department and the Children's Department
have computers with access to the Internet available to the public. The terminals open when the library opens and close 15 minutes before the library
closes (See Library Hours). Customers use their library card number to gain access
to these computers. Customers
can
also use their library card to reserve a library computer for use immediately or
in the future. All customers are
allowed up to two hours of Internet computer access per day, but that usage must
be divided into 30-minute sessions. Unlimited
printing is available for a nominal fee.
CD-ROM Stations
The Adult/Young Adult Department has CD-ROM
stations that offer reference sources such as Thomas' Register; Columbia's World of Quotations; the New Jersey Administrative Code
and Grolier's Encyclopedia while the Children's Department has CD-ROM
stations offering a variety of educational and recreational games.
Word Processing Stations
The Word Processing Rooms have computers that offer
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Corel Word Perfect. The Word Processing Rooms
open when the library opens and closes 15 minutes before the library closes. (See
Library Hours).
Self Teaching Video
Professor
Learn office computer skills for free with the latest in self-teaching computer courses, the Video Professor. Using the
"What-You-See-Is- What-You-Do" style of teaching, Video Professor does not involve manuals to read or classes to attend. All courses are available on CD-ROMs on the Word Processing computers at the Westergard Library.
Courses offered are FrontPage, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Publisher. Each course is available at the beginner, intermediate and advanced level.
